On Friday, November 16 at 12:00 p.m. in 205 Pence Hall, Education Abroad will be hosting an information session on the UK Sponsored "Exploring World Heritage in Guatemala" program.
This is an embedded program, meaning there are both on-campus and international components to the course. Dr. Douglas Appler, faculty member in the Historic Preservation department at the University of Kentucky, will be leading this course.
Taking
place in the World Heritage site of Antigua, Guatemala, this program
focuses on the concepts of heritage tourism, world heritage, and on the
photographic documentation of historic sites. Planned by the Spanish and
built in the 17th and 18th centuries as the capital of Guatemala,
Antigua was at the height of its power when it was partially destroyed
by an earthquake and abandoned in 1773. As a legacy of that colonial
past, Antigua is home to some of the most celebrated examples of Spanish
Baroque architecture in the New World. Many of those buildings are
still standing, some are now ruins, but all provide an unparalleled
opportunity for the documentation of historic architecture and for the
exploration of the concept of world heritage.
